Coalfields Expressway Study Featured by WVVA

A preliminary engineering study led by ATCS, in partnership with the Virginia Coalfields Expressway Authority and VDOT, was recently featured in WVVA News. The study evaluates the long-term transportation and economic benefits of completing the Coalfields Expressway (CFX), a key corridor for improving mobility and supporting regional transition in Southwest Virginia.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Cut travel times by up to 40%
  • Improve freight access and reliability
  • Support economic transition beyond coal
  • Enhance regional mobility and emergency response
  • Identify diverse pathways to fund the remaining segments

The study was presented in December 2025 and reflects future conditions modeling through 2045, along with input from regional stakeholders.
