Engineers Week Spotlight: Mason Jeon, EIT on Land Development
As Engineers Week shines a light on the industry’s brightest minds, we’re proud to feature Mason Jeon, EIT, a dedicated Design Engineer at ATCS. Mason’s journey in engineering is a testament to curiosity, resilience, and a passion for creating spaces that bring communities together.
A Passion for Building Communities
Mason’s fascination with cities and how people interact in shared spaces began at a young age. He was intrigued by the organization of buildings and public areas, recognizing early on that the design of a space can shape social interactions. His time on a college campus further fueled this interest, reinforcing his desire to pursue land development engineering—a field where he could influence the built environment in meaningful ways.
His journey at ATCS began in transportation engineering through an internship, where he gained valuable experience in the field. However, Mason’s curiosity led him to explore other disciplines within civil engineering, ultimately finding his niche in land development. This transition allowed him to focus on hands-on design work that directly contributes to shaping communities.
A Project That Defined Growth
Among the many projects Mason has worked on, one in particular stands out — his very first project as a full-time ATCS employee. The two-building multifamily development in Prince George’s County was an early career-defining moment. ATCS played a key role in the concept design phase, and while most projects typically require only two concept designs before finalization, this project required eight iterations.
The challenge called for persistence and problem-solving, allowing Mason to sharpen his Civil 3D software skills and develop resilience. The experience was both demanding and fulfilling, solidifying his confidence in land development and setting the foundation for his career growth.
The Unsung Role of Land Development Engineering
Land development is the bridge between architecture and construction. It’s a field that transforms blueprints into livable, functional spaces where communities thrive. Land development engineers like Mason play a crucial role in shaping the places where people live, work, and connect, leaving a lasting impact on cities and neighborhoods.
Mason’s journey exemplifies the dedication and innovation that Engineers Week celebrates. His story is a reminder that engineering is more than just technical expertise—it’s about shaping the world we live in, one design at a time.
Advice for Aspiring Engineers
For young engineers eager to make an impact in land development, especially in the dynamic DC Metro area, Mason emphasizes the importance of networking and soft skills.
“Building your network is crucial—technical skills will get you far, but soft skills will carry your career,” he advises. “Take initiative, embrace problem-solving, and don’t fear failure. The most important takeaway from any challenge is the lesson learned.”
